Roots is a private family history app. Your data is only shared with family members you invite — we do not sell your data or share it with advertisers.
All data is stored securely using Supabase, hosted on AWS. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest.
Only family members you invite to Roots can see the information you add. We do not sell your data or share it with advertisers. We use a small number of service providers who process data solely on our behalf to run the app: Supabase (data hosting and authentication), Sentry (crash reporting), and Expo (app updates and push notification delivery).
You can request a copy of your data at any time from Settings → Privacy & Data → Export your data in the app. This includes your profile, everything you've personally authored or uploaded, and your account settings, delivered as a JSON file you can save or share from your device.
You can delete your account at any time from Settings → Privacy & Data → Delete account in the app — see our account deletion page for full details, including how to request deletion without the app installed.
Because Roots is a shared family history platform, deleting your account does not delete content you've contributed to shared family profiles (stories, life entries, comments, and similar) — other family members depend on that shared history. Instead, that content stays and your name is removed from it. Your own login, personal settings, and anything exclusively tied to your account are deleted immediately and cannot be recovered. If you were the sole admin of a profile, it becomes unclaimed rather than deleted, so another family member can claim it.
