Delete Your Account — Roots
Last updated: August 2026
How to delete your account
Open the Roots app, go to Settings → Privacy & Data → Delete account, and confirm. Deletion happens immediately — there is no waiting period, and it cannot be undone.
Don't have the app installed anymore? Email matt.j.clary@gmail.com from the address associated with your account and we'll delete it for you.
What happens when you delete your account
- Your login and profile are removed immediately, and you're signed out everywhere.
- Your personal settings — notification preferences, ignored users, saved consents — are deleted.
- Roots is a shared family history platform: stories, life entries, comments, and other content you've contributed to shared family profiles are not deleted, because other family members depend on that shared history. Instead, your name is removed from anything you authored or tagged — it becomes anonymous, unattributed content.
- If you were the sole admin of a family member's profile, that profile is not deleted either — it becomes unclaimed, so another family member can claim admin access to it going forward.
This is irreversible. There is no grace period, and we cannot recover a deleted account.
Exporting your data
Before deleting, you can export a copy of your data (your profile, everything you've authored or uploaded, and your account settings) from Settings → Privacy & Data → Export your data in the app. This produces a JSON file you can save or share from your device.
